14 inch Brass Telescope with Leather and Case [001988]

Before he left home shortly after his 16th birthday, Papa had given him a handsome brass telescope with case. Set your sights on prosperous future, Papa said, and follow the Big Dipper over the Sierra Nevada if you need to find your way home.

Looking over the spyglass with a mix of melancholy and excitement, the young man slid it back into the compact leather case which he then tucked in with his kit and on his way. He left without looking back; his past, present and future all coming into full view.

12x power. Brass pipes with black leather trim, telescope measures 15 inches extended, collapses to 5.5 inches. Felt lined black leather case measures 6 inches long by 2 inches diameter, and features an adjustable shoulder strap and brass hardware. Imported.

Very nicely made. I'd actually consider buying one for more than just the appearance. Though the appearance is one of quality it's also very functional with decent optics.

I'll admit, I was a wee bit worried when reading some of the reviews of this telescope. Fortunately, I did not run into any of the problems others have described. The only problem was getting my own eyes to focus, when they did the view was perfect and clear! I was surprised by how much 12x was and had to try to find things further away to focus on (at first I kept seeing strange blobs and was concerned, haha). As for the case, the strap is on the wimpy side, but in my past experience with leather, even when it's a small amount it usually holds up well for quite awhile when cared for, so I'm not too concerned.

"Recommend to a friend" is a bit qualified - it would depend what they wanted it for. If it's only going to be looked at from the outside, great; the brass and the overall appearance are nice. The leather of the case and strap are pretty low-quality, but it's what I expected for the price. The only thing I was actually disappointed about was that I would have liked to be able to at least *see* through the thing. I wasn't expecting good optics or indeed any real magnification - just clear glass I could see through. But it's impossibly out of focus and there's obviously no way to focus it.

First off, like the other reviews say, you *do* need to polish the lenses before use. However, after that, this is actually a very nice little telescope, good for viewing objects at large distances. You can focus the lenses by adjusting the length, and it both looks nice and feels like it's well-constructed.Do be careful about extending the device, though. Pulling too hard on one edge can cause the optics to pop off!The case is better quality than I expected; the only downside is the strap for the buckle is very flimsy, and requires a bit of finagling to make it work.

I don't know where H.E. is getting these, but they're just great! It's sturdy, usable, and looks great when you're in the crow's nest looking for Island X. That being said, It feels like an antique, but acts like a prop. It was shipped in a musty leather case, and I had to disassemble the thing and clean out the inside and the lenses. I say it's like a replica because it's a fairly low magnification with no ability to focus. If you're looking for a sexy, vintage telescope, this is the best I've found in the internet. But if you're looking for a tool to spot land from a mile away, well... better luck elsewhere.

The entire scope is well made and sturdy. It is hard to use at first, as getting the the two pieces of glass to line up for viewing clearly is tricky, but it is functional and surprisingly clear. It's more than just a steam punk accessory. My only con is the case that comes with it is kind of flimsy and the strap is lame, but I didn't even realize it came with a case in the first place so I'm very happy with my purchase.
